In the 1950’s they expanded into crib mattresses then added other infant product categories like carriers, high chairs and strollers. Based in Chicago, the company is family owned and operated by the grandson of founder Leo Koltun. The Sealy Soybean Foam-Core crib mattress has been a big hit for manufacturer Kolcraft and is a good deal at $125. Yes, a percentage of the mattress’ foam (about 22%) is made from soybeans, which replaces some of the typical petrochemical foams found in other inexpensive mattresses. As you can see below, the green foam soybean core is surrounded by two layers of padding and covered in a vinyl laminate.

The cover is made with a vinyl laminate that is phthalate-free and it doesn’t use any toxic fire retardants. The Sealy Soybean Foam-Core is GreenGuard certified and made in America. The mattress also has square corners (see below) for better fit. At just 8.3 pounds, this lightweight but firm mattress makes changing sheets easy. Some parents have lamented the fact that the entire mattress is not made of soybean foam, but we think it does offer a middle ground for parents who can’t afford a $300 crib mattress for their child. It does reduce the amount of petrochemicals used in production. Other parents noted the mattress seemed too hard—but it is designed to be firm. LA Baby is another lower priced, mattress manufacturer claiming to make an “organic” crib mattress (for as little as $71), but we aren’t impressed with their quality and durability. Serta by LaJobi also offers an organic cotton covered mattress ($160), as does Simmons by Delta—but both of these mattresses are coil and we prefer foam. For parents who want an eco-friendly crib mattress for their baby but can’t afford a second mortgage for one of those $400 models, the Sealy Soybeen Foam-Core crib mattress by Kolcraft is a great option. It’s affordable (around $100) and uses less petroleum products in its production. Parents tell us there is no chemical smell when they take it out of the box and note that the mattress is firm but lightweight.
